Become one of the first people to help build a new model of microbiome education that combines rigorous science with practical, personalized guidance. As a founding participant, you'll receive advanced shotgun metagenomic sequencing using Illumina NovaSeq technology, a personalized educational report, and an individual consultation to help you better understand your microbiome. Your feedback will also help shape future educational resources and reporting tools.
Here is more detailed information about the process:
1. Initial meeting and informed consent - We will schedule a brief (10-15 minute Zoom chat) to review the process, answer any questions and go through informed consent materials. I would love to be able to include your sample in a future study but you can opt-in or out of that. I do want participants to know as in any research, this is all completely confidential.
2. Collection Kit and Questionnaires - I will mail or deliver a package containing:
A stool collection kit from Zymo Research, including collection instructions
A few short health, lifestyle, and dietary questionnaires
Instructions for completing a 3–4 day food record before collecting your sample
A prepaid shipping envelope addressed to Zymo Research
After collecting your sample, you will mail it directly to Zymo. Sending it the same day of sample collection is preferred, although the collection solution is designed to stabilize the sample during shipping.
3. Sequencing and data analysis - Once I receive the sequencing data, I will analyze it using a metagenomic bioinformatics pipeline that I am developing for the Living Food Initiative.
4. Personalized educational report - From your data, I will create a personalized report describing the microorganisms and microbial functions detected in your sample. Depending upon the sequencing results, this may include information about bacteria, archaea, fungi, viruses, and other microbial organisms.
5. Results consultation - Once the report is complete, I will send it to you and we will schedule a follow-up meeting (either in-person or over zoom) to review your results and discuss any questions. This part is completely optional though.
